Roof observations from the ground
You can learn a lot about your roof without leaving the ground. Safe observations help you describe what you notice when you ask for help.
Look from the ground or a window
Step back and look at the roof from the yard, or from an upper window. Binoculars help you see shingle condition, dark streaks, and sagging without climbing.
Check the gutters and downspouts
Granules from shingles often collect in gutters and at downspout outlets. A heavy accumulation can mean a surface that is wearing, though it is not a diagnosis on its own.
Note interior clues
A stain on a ceiling or a damp spot in the attic can point to where water may be getting in. Note the room and the side of the house it appears on.
Do not climb the roof
Leave the roof to the crew. Do not climb up to inspect it yourself, and do not try to diagnose a problem from a photo alone. Share what you saw from the ground and let the review happen on site.
