Nevada roofing hubThe layers beneath the surface
A new roof is a layered assembly. Sound decking anchors the fasteners, underlayment is a secondary protective layer, and starter strip, drip edge, and hip and ridge caps protect the edges and peaks. Fastener placement and count follow the manufacturer's system for the specific product, not a single universal rule. Ask which product is being installed and what its fastener schedule requires.
Roof pitch and material
Steep, standard, or low-slope, and what is up there now. Pitch changes which materials are suitable, so it is worth noting before scope is set.
Existing layers
How many layers are already on the roof. That affects whether a re-cover is possible or a full tear-off is needed.
Flashing and penetrations
Valleys, step and counter flashing, kick-out diverters, and pipe boots. These transitions are where water is guided, not just covered.
Ventilation
Soffit intake and ridge exhaust, and whether the attic breathes. Balanced ventilation needs both intake and exhaust.
Questions to ask before you agree to scope
- What does the written scope include, and what is excluded?
- Which product is being installed, and what does its manufacturer system require?
- How are concealed condition changes, disposal, and property protection handled?
- What is the product warranty versus the workmanship warranty?
These are questions for you to ask, not a claim that any contractor performs a fixed method.
